Exterior of HABODE Modular Home

Exterior

The exterior of the HABODE is powder coated aluminium sip panels fitted into thermally broken extrusions that results in an extremely low maintenance finish that does not require painting. Washing annually with a car wash and wax product using a brush and sponge, then hosing, is all that is needed. The sliding windows are thermally broken, double glazed, tinted glass toughened to New Zealand AS/NZS2208 grade A standard. External bulkhead lights are fitted at the front and back of the house as well as on each end. One external tap can also be found at each end of the house.

Steel structure of HABODE building

Structure

The frames and profiles are made from Corten steel with an 150 micron rubberised marine paint system finish. Steel thicknesses range from 1.65mm through to 6mm and are fully mig welded. Corten steel is a group of steel alloys developed to eliminate the need for painting, meaning that maintenance and repair costs are low. The safety of the structure was put to test during the 2010 earthquakes in Christchurch and 2016 in Kaikoura. Whilst buildings all around them failed, HABODEs stood strong and suffered no structural damage, broken glass or internal wall panel damage. Mechanical testing has also been carried out, and two engineering reports have certified that a HABODE house can withstand an equivalent of maximum speeds of 257km/hr of hurricane strength wind.

Steel roof of HABODE modular home

Roof

The roof is profiled, Corten steel - three times the thickness of Colorsteel - with a marine paint system finish in charcoal grey. Both the roof and sub-floors are fully welded and insulated envelopes. We describe the roof and sub-floor as being ‘wings’ attached to a central core. This is similar to wings on a butterfly and was designed to fold in and out for ease of shipping and deployment. This results in a 1.6m wide central gutter down the middle of the roof that channels water at each end of the building into stainless steel sub-gutters and downpipes.

Interior of HABODE modular home

Interior

The interior of the HABODE has an upward sloping ceiling reaching 2.9m at the outer walls, giving a feeling of height and space, and is constructed from aluminium tongue and groove effect panels in a warm white colour. The walls consist of thermally broken, insulated panels with a coloured aluminium laminate finish. These panels are of the same construction and robust nature as the outside cladding allowing ease of cleaning and maintenance. The interior colours are light grey and warm white. There is LED down lighting throughout and numerous wall, and pop-up floor, mounted double power outlets in all the rooms and service areas.

Insulation and heating in a HABODE modular home

Insulation/heating

All doors, windows and wall panels are thermally broken and insulated creating a damp-free, warm environment. Additionally, each HABODE can be fitted with either a wood burner or wall mounted air conditioning units depending on taste. Solar panels are an optional extra if you wish to go ‘off-grid’.

Bamboo flooring of HABODE modular home

Flooring

The flooring is constructed from recyclable and biodegradable 12mm thick bamboo tongue and groove boards. Bamboo is a durable flooring recognised by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program as being an ecologically-friendly building material. It is easy to clean by using only a broom and a damp sponge, and is extremely hard wearing having a lifespan of generally 25+ years.
