A Multiproof is a statement by MBIE that a set of plans and specifications for a building complies with the Building Code. To be eligible you must have the intention and the ability to build an approved design at least 10 times over two years.

International Building Solutions Limited was the first company in New Zealand to apply for a MultiProof Certificate when it was launched in 2010 by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

During the Multiproof review, the structural design was signed off by two independent engineers. They stated that a HABODE is compliant for cyclone level wind as seen in parts of the west coast of Australia, and therefore can easily carry the New Zealand wind load and be suitable for any location in New Zealand.

Although a MultiProof house design has been approved as compliant with the Building Code, it is still necessary to apply for a building consent each time you want to build. This allows a Building Consent Authority (BCA) to confirm and establish:

• the design, with any permitted variations, is the same as the design approved in the MultiProof;

• the proposed site meets the conditions of the MultiProof; and

• any site specific features of the design comply with the Building Code.

However, because you have a MultiProof for the design, the BCA must process your building consent application within 10 working days instead of the usual 20.

Because you are buying a pre-consented building, the only time a Council Inspector arrives on site is to check piles and, later, sign off when your HABODE is connected to services.
